My Research

Jackie Horn

I like all the bits that make up 5th/6th grade science! Thus, I burn with a passion for science and place the pursuit of knowledge at the top of my list!! Forever the eternal researcher!!!

My current interests lie in bio-mineralization, biomarkers, arsenic speciation, and trace metal incorporation. I am a big interdisciplinary thinker and love looking for the answers to questions that need a collective to solve them. I also will use any and all tools to look at a problem, I am resourceful and that is my gift.

My current research is quantifying the various arsenic species in natural and sulfuric waters and determining their thermodynamic equilibrium constants in order to build a geochemical model that will further the understanding of arsenic behavior in natural systems.

My side project is looking at microbes in geologic systems and trying to understand the biogeochemistry that is associated with the uptake, transport, alteration, and incorporation of trace metals. I also am looking at identify biomarkers for biogenic minerals in natural and sulfuric environments. My long term goal is to find evidence of life on other planetary bodies via biogenic minerals.

My Life at Tulane

Jackie Horn

The atmosphere of New Orleans is best described and ‘Unique’. The transition to a life at Tulane has been most pleasant. People are thoughtful and caring, and go out of their way to make you feel like you belong. The beautiful campus and neighborhoods provided inspiration, and offer fresh perspectives for learning and growth.

It is a place where one can set their mind towards audacious endeavors and succeed!
