Tulane study evaluates the status of brown pelicans along the Gulf Coast
Tulane University’s Karubian Lab has released a new five-year, two-part study on the populations of brown pelicans along the Gulf Coast. The work charts the birds’ ability to rebound from near extinction in the state of Louisiana as a result of storms and the 2010 Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill.
Loss of wintering grounds hits a sad note for common songbird
A Tulane University researcher who studies bird migration has found that a decline in the number of wood thrushes is probably due to deforestation in Central America, not to the loss and degrading of forest in the United States where the songbird breeds.
The study by Caz Taylor, an associate professor in the Tulane Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, was published Nov. 6 in the open-access journal Scientific Reports.
Is lead making birds more aggressive? Tulane researchers investigate
Could mockingbirds, known for mimicking the sounds of other birds, also be mirroring the effects of lead exposure in humans?
Tulane University researchers have received a grant from the Morris Animal Foundation to continue their study on this and other possible results of lead exposure in wildlife.
Stamps scholarship offers cultural immersion experience
Tulane University senior Clare Lister didn’t spend much time in a typical classroom during her study abroad semester in Tanzania this spring. Instead, she went on safari to learn about wildlife conservation, to a homestay in a remote village to learn about Maasai culture and to a rainforest reserve to learn about ecology.
On the mighty Mississippi: Tulane University’s ByWater Institute
Amble just a stone’s throw downriver of Mardi Gras World, upriver of the Crescent City Connection Bridge, on the East Bank of the mighty Mississippi River in New Orleans, and you’ll note a sleek, modernistic grey building with water-retention gardens in front.
Within the interestingly patterned walls of the new Tulane River and Coastal Center, remarkable things are happening: The crème de la crème of scientists are putting their heads together to solve the enormous problems of coastal restoration, in the wake of eroding wetlands and rising seas, in Louisiana.

- The 2020-21 academic year is the first year that EEB has given the Meg Mauer Teaching Fellow Award, which is intended to celebrate one Undergraduate Teaching Fellow who demonstrated exceptional service to the instruction of EBIO 1010/1015. But in light of the remarkable complications to regular instruction that the COVID-19 pandemic caused and the exceptional effort that each Undergraduate Fellow put forth, the Faculty of EEB unanimously decided to present the first ever Meg Mauer Undergraduate Teaching Fellow Award to ALL of the Undergraduate Fellows.
