A field geology course of at least 3 credits is required for the Geology major. Currently, students are required to complete this course at another accredited college or university. These courses, usually known as Field Camps, are generally offered during the summer term and range from 4-7 weeks. Most students complete this requirement the summer after their junior year. Prerequisites vary, but usually include Mineralogy/Petrology, Sedimentology/Stratigraphy and Structural Geology.
There is much variety amongst field camps, with some being more broad-based and others more focused on specific disciplines. Many incorporate tools such as GPS and GIS. You need to decide which course to attend early, as most have application deadlines in the early spring and space is often limited. The course you choose needs to be approved by the Geology major advisor.
Costs vary considerably depending on the location, means of travel, type of accommodation, tuition etc. The National Association of Geoscience Teachers sponsors $750 scholarships to help offset the costs. The application deadline is in mid- February.

Once you have been accepted into a field camp approved by your major advisor you must register at Tulane for EENS-3990 Field Geology for the term in which you are taking the course. You will not be charged Tulane tuition for this course, but rather through the university teaching the course. Once you have finished the course, you must have a transcript sent directly to the Geology major advisor as soon as possible.
