CEAI is a multi-disciplinary team of scientists, engineers, students, and community partners dedicated to innovating human-centered AI to benefit society. CEAI leads cross-disciplinary scientific research, facilitates project-based learning experiences, conducts extensive community outreach, hosts workshops and symposiums, and awards seed grants to support human-centered AI research across the university.
Research
CEAI supports human-centered AI research across health, criminal justice, micro-finance, social media, artistic innovation, civic technology, and other areas where AI can benefit society.
External Funding
CEAI faculty are supported by awards from the NSF, NIH, and NEH for projects focusing on AI applied to health, criminal justice, micro-finance, social media, and artistic innovation.
Publications
CEAI faculty publish articles on topics including using open-source technologies to safely deploy large language models, optimizing telehealth for diabetes management, discrimination in access to mental health care, and improving the fairness and transparency of recommendation algorithms.
Seed Grants
CEAI, in partnership with CAIDS, provides seed grants to support AI research across the university, including projects in social work, architecture, biology, and other disciplines. Learn more here
AI Engineering Support
CEAI supports early-stage research, entrepreneurship, industry, and civic technology projects through AI Innovation Engineering support, helping teams prototype, test, and deploy human-centered AI systems. Learn more here.

CEAI engages students in project-based learning experiences that connect AI research with real-world community needs.
Service Learning
Through Service Learning capstone projects, dozens of students have worked hand-in-hand with local non-profits and Center faculty to apply cutting-edge AI systems to improve access to city council meetings, monitor equity in the court system, and track blight across the city.
Partnerships with City Governments and NGOs
CEAI partners with city governments, non-profits, and community organizations to create AI tools that address civic challenges and expand public access to information.

CEAI connects researchers, students, community partners, and the public through events, workshops, speaker series, and news programming.
Lunch and Learn Seminar Series
Our Lunch and Learn seminar series, co-sponsored with CAIDS, brings together faculty, students, and community members to discuss emerging topics in AI.
Workshops
CEAI organizes community workshops on AI, academic networking events, distinguished speaker events, and other programs that support responsible and inclusive AI innovation.
