Dr. Keena Kareem Honored for Teaching Excellence and Curricular Innovation
Dr. Keena Kareem, Professor of Practice in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, has been awarded the Duren Professorship Seed Grant and the School of Science and Engineering Early Achievement in Teaching Award, recognizing her exceptional contributions to Tulane's academic mission.
Teaching Excellence
A native New Orleanian with extensive experience, including a PhD in Igneous and Metomorphic Petrology, and as an exploration and production geologist in the energy industry, Dr. Kareem brings real-world expertise to her teaching. Her courses consistently receive outstanding evaluations for clarity, enthusiasm, and relevance to practice. As Director of the GIS Certificate Program, she teaches across all curriculum levels—from introductory geology to advanced seminars in volcanology and GIS.
Innovation & Mentorship
The Duren seed grant will support Dr. Kareem's development of innovative courses in geoscience and energy studies. Beyond the classroom, she is a dedicated mentor who guides students through research, career development, and graduate study—often continuing to advise alumni as they advance in their careers.
