2026 Flowerree Symposium

The 2026 Flowerree Symposium, “New Orleans in a Changing Environment: From Lessons Learned to Lasting Resilience,” will bring together leading scientists, engineers, policy experts and cultural scholars to examine New Orleans as a living case study in coastal risk reduction.

Led by Sönke Dangendorf, the David and Jane Flowerree Associate Professor of River-Coastal Science and Engineering at Tulane, and Charlie Hess, president of Infrastructure and Coastal Restoration at Brown & Root Industrial Services, the symposium will connect lessons from historic floods and hurricanes with the challenges facing the region today. Presentations and panel discussions will explore sea-level rise, storm-tide behavior, flood protection, infrastructure maintenance, governance and funding, with a focus on the future of the Hurricane and Storm Damage Risk Reduction System.

The Flowerree Symposium showcases Tulane’s leadership in addressing climate change and its effects on coastal communities while creating space for evidence-based, interdisciplinary conversations about lasting resilience.

The event will take place Thursday, October 22, from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Diboll Gallery at the Newcomb Institute. Registration is required.
