Biography

Dr. Matt Czapiga holds a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and completed postdoctoral research at Delft University of Technology and the University of South Carolina. As an integral part of his research effort, Dr. Czapiga has been engaged in community outreach through development of laboratory exhibits to disseminate fundamental concepts of fluid mechanics, urban hydraulics and hydrology, and river engineering.

Research

My research focuses on understanding how water, sediment, and vegetation co-evolve to create and change rivers, floodplains, and deltas. My approach is characterized by a desire to unite fundamental science with applications to pressing real-world engineering problems. This is often achieved through the integration of laboratory experiments, field observations and numerical modeling. This integration allows identification and design of nature-based solutions to mitigate adverse impacts of human activities or climate impacts along rivers and coastlines. This work has been published in leading scientific and engineering journals such as Nature Geoscience, Water Resources Research, Journal of Geophysical Research, and Journal of Hydraulic Engineering.
