Pendergraft Herbert Buchanan Professorship in Mathematics Review begins: November 15, 2025
Location: New Orleans, Louisiana
Position Description
The Mathematics Department at Tulane University invites applications for the Pendergraft Herbert Buchanan Professorship in Mathematics to begin in the fall of 2026. Applicants at the Associate Professor level are preferred, but exceptional applicants at other ranks may also be considered.
We seek candidates who have established a strong record of independent research, are committed to excellence in teaching, and show a dedication to service. The successful candidate will strengthen our existing research program in analysis, particularly in areas such as partial differential equations, dynamical systems, stochastic analysis, or fluid dynamics. We are especially interested in candidates whose research has the potential to connect with broader university-wide initiatives that emphasize interdisciplinary collaboration and address critical global challenges.
The successful candidate will be expected to: (1) develop and carry out a program of research and other scholarly activities; (2) teach and advise students at the undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels; and (3) participate in departmental and university service.
Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Mathematics or a closely related field.
- A minimum of four years of experience as a tenure-track professor, or equivalent post-Ph.D. experience in academia, industry, or government.
- A strong, established research program in mathematical analysis, with a preference for expertise in partial differential equations, dynamical systems, stochastic analysis, or fluid dynamics.
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Application Instructions
Applications should be submitted through Interfolio and must include the following:
- A standard AMS cover sheet
- A curriculum vitae
- Separate statements on teaching philosophy and research program
- At least three letters of recommendation
Application review will begin on November 15, 2025 and continue until the position is filled.

Postdoctoral Fellow, Mathematics - Analysis Review begins: December 15, 2025
Location: New Orleans, Louisiana
Position Description
The Department of Mathematics at Tulane University invites applications for a teaching postdoctoral scholar to work in the research group of Prof. Samuel Punshon-Smith.
The research will focus on the mathematical analysis of stochastic models, particularly in areas related to fluid mechanics, stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs), dynamical systems, and ergodic theory. The successful candidate will investigate the long-time behavior of these systems, with an emphasis on topics such as mixing, the emergence of turbulence, regularization by noise, and the study of Lyapunov exponents.
This is a teaching postdoctoral position, and the appointee will be expected to teach two mathematics courses per year. The appointment is for one year and may be extended on an annual basis for up to a total of three years, contingent upon satisfactory performance and funding availability. The position is expected to begin in the Fall of 2026, but a later start date is negotiable.
Qualifications
- A Ph.D. in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related field is required by the start date of the appointment.
- A strong research background in stochastic analysis, partial differential equations, dynamical systems, or ergodic theory.
- Demonstrated potential for excellence in both research and teaching.
Application Instructions
Applicants must submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a research statement, a teaching statement, and at least three letters of recommendation through Interfolio. At least one letter should address the candidate's teaching potential.
Review of applications will begin on December 15, 2025, and will continue until the position is filled.
For more information, please contact Prof. Samuel Punshon-Smith at spunshonsmith@tulane.edu.
