Russell H. Schmehl was born in Sayre, PA, USA. He obtained his BS degree from Roanoke College in 1976 and his PhD degree from the University of North Carolina in 1980 under the direction of David Whitten. After a year of  postdoctoral work with Royce Murray (also North Carolina), he moved to Tulane University (1982) to begin work as an assistant professor. He was promoted to associate professor in 1987 and full professor in 1993. His interests include photochemistry and photophysics, energy and electron transfer processes in transition metal complexes, luminescent sensors,materials and photoreactions in organized media.

Atahar graduated with his M.S. in Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering from the University of Dhaka in 2016.  He also received his B.S. in Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering from the University of Dhaka in 2014.  Atahar is a joint member of the Schmehl and Donahue groups.
