Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Minor
Chemical engineering combines principles of chemistry, physics, biology, and mathematics to design processes that economically and sustainably meet human needs for energy, food, healthcare, and technology. Chemical engineers are not only leaders in traditional chemical, oil and gas, and brewing industries, but they are also at the forefront of advancements in pharmaceutical discovery and production, renewable energy, biotechnology, and environmental protection. The Chemical Engineering minor will provide a foundation in the core principles of chemical engineering, with students having the skills to assess chemical and/or biochemical processes with basic knowledge of core chemical engineering fundamentals. These core fundamentals surround material and energy balances, transport phenomena, and chemical thermodynamics.
Curriculum Requirements
The minor requires 18 credit hours, built around three core courses — Material & Energy Balances, Thermodynamics I, and Transport I: Fluids — plus a minimum of 9 credit hours of 3000-level or higher CENG coursework, with a minimum 2.000 cumulative GPA and a C- minimum in each core course. Students in Biomedical Engineering, Engineering Physics, or Civil Engineering-Water and Environment may substitute an equivalent course from their major for one of the core requirements.

This is typically done in the Sophomore year. To declare the major, students must turn in a Major Declaration form and meet with an advisor. Completed forms should then be turned in to the Project Assistant in Boggs 300. The form will be signed and returned to you, and you can send it along to NTC Advising. Please note that it is your responsibility to send this form to your NTC advisor.
