Welcome to the Department of Computer Science
In the Department of Computer Science at Tulane we emphasize both core computer science and its applications to related areas in the sciences and engineering, the health and social sciences, and the humanities. Our goal is for our faculty and students to be recognized nationally and internationally for their interdisciplinary research, and we want to train the next generation of computer scientists who work at the interface of computer science and other disciplines.
Students who have completed our undergraduate coordinate major have found jobs in computer science and related areas, and several are pursuing PhD degrees at leading departments. Our students and alumni have won awards including best paper awards and Tulane's Peery Medal, as well as fellowships including Facebook and Google PhD Fellowships and a postdoctoral CI Fellowship from the Computing Research Association.
Our faculty conduct cutting edge research in a variety of disciplines including algorithms, artificial intelligence, computational biology, computer science education, computational geometry and topology, computer vision, data science and large data processing, domain theory and semantics of programming languages, game theory, image processing, machine learning, natural language processing, networking, cloud computing optimization, privacy and security, and scientific visualization. Our research is nationally and internationally recognized, and is funded from agencies such as NSF, NIH, DARPA, and DoD.

Tulane Professor Secures Prestigious NIH Award to Study Family Mental Health
Dr. Selin Zeytinoglu, an Assistant Professor at Tulane University's School of Science and Engineering, has been awarded a prestigious K01 Research Scientist Development Award from the National Institute of Mental Health. The four-year grant, totaling $616,658, will fund her research project titled "Social and Neural Pathways Linking Parental Anxiety with Youths' Daily Emotions," positioning Tulane as a growing center for innovative family mental health research.

But for Justin Baris, a Tulane University biomedical engineering alumnus, returning to the Uptown campus offered a different perspective: the view from behind the recruiting table.

Ian Faul, a senior from New Orleans double majoring in psychology and philosophy with a French minor, embodies the interdisciplinary spirit that defines Tulane University. On the pre-med track while conducting neuroscience research and editing the student newspaper, Faul has built a college experience that connects diverse fields and ideas in ways that reflect Tulane's commitment to turning innovation into impact.
"I came to Tulane very much undecided," Faul said. "[But] I was pretty sure that I wasn't going to be a doctor coming into college," he explained.
Tulane Innovation Institute Spring 2026 Provost's Proof of Concept Fund Awards $150,000 to Three Faculty Researchers in Diagnostics, Surgical Infection Prevention, and Quantum Materials
Promising university research often stalls at the border between discovery and application. The Tulane University Innovation Institute, in partnership with the Office of the Provost, established the Provost's Proof of Concept Fund (PPOC) in fall 2022 to cross that border — providing grants of up to $50,000 to support the technical development and market research needed to bring innovations to commercial viability, whether through licensing to existing companies or launch as spinout ventures.

When Gary Butler arrived at Tulane University, he was a mechanical engineering student with an interest in robotics and a second defining commitment on the football field. “Those were probably the two primary things that defined my Tulane experience,” he said. “My time as a mechanical engineer and my time as a football player.”
