Current Research Opportunities

Graduate opportunities exist for prospective M.S. and Ph.D. students interested in Fall 2024 admission. The application deadline is January 8, 2024. There is no fee for submitting an application to our program.

Most Earth & Environmental Sciences graduate students are supported as teaching assistants or as research assistants through funded grants. Competitive fellowships with larger stipends are also available to top applicants for the Ph.D. program.

Factors we consider in accepting graduate program applicants include:

  • GPAs from previous degree programs; note that we can consider unofficial transcripts, but official transcripts must be submitted for accepted students prior to admission
  • 3 letters of recommendation, preferably including at least 1 from a former professor
  • A clear and succinct application statement that individually addresses each of these three areas: 1) What are your research goals (including your anticipated advisor) should you be accepted at Tulane? (~350 words); 2) Describe an experience in which you initiated and brought to completion a significant project (semester long class project, supervised research, internship, non-academic job or experience, etc.). What did you learn from that experience and what skills did you gain? (~350 words);  3) Describe a significant challenge you faced during your academic training and how you worked to overcome that challenge. What did you learn from that experience and what skills did you gain? (~350 words)
  • The willingness of a faculty member to serve as a research advisor. All applicants are advised to reach out to a potential advisor before applying to see what opportunities are available in that advisors research group. All currently available research projects are described here.
  • TOEFL score, only if appropriate, with a minimum score of 90
  • We do not use GRE scores as part of our application.
