Tulane to begin new master’s program in materials engineering

The Tulane University School of Science and Engineering is launching a new master’s program designed to help graduates land careers in such fields as biotechnology, aerospace, defense, information technologies and energy.

The Master of Science Degree in Materials Science and Engineering will kick off at the beginning of the 2019-20 academic year. It is an interdisciplinary degree that will focus on developing a deep understanding of materials modeling, processing, structure, properties and performance required to solve complex technological problems.

Tulane study says seas may be rising faster than thought

A new Tulane University study questions the reliability of how sea-level rise in low-lying coastal areas such as southern Louisiana is measured and suggests that the current method underestimates the severity of the problem. The research is the focus of a news article published this week in the journal Science.

New hope for a new generation

In her cross-disciplinary Behavioral and Neurodevelopmental Genetics Laboratory, Stacy Drury, MD, PhD, and her colleagues study the relationship between childhood experiences and genetic and epigenetic factors, striving to understand how this shapes a child’s long-term development and health.

Epigenetics is the study of changes in gene expression that are caused by factors that are “above” the genome or the DNA sequence.

Tulane professor flying high with new bird lecture series

From the woodpecker and the parrot to the falcon and the dove, birds are among the most fascinating creatures on the planet.

As Tulane biologist and birding expert Bruce Fleury says, “Birds are phenomenally interesting—and often extremely surprising—in their biology, physiology, aerodynamics and their multifaceted behavioral adaptations.”

New deans, new directions

They are an academic quartet, this new group of incoming deans, and they are all happy to have shown up on campus this fall within a few months of each other.

They’ve never heard of it happening at any other university: four new deans at four of the nine academic schools.


It’s a rather unique infusion of new academic leadership at Tulane. “We’re always dreaming up new ways to work together, said Kimberly Foster, the new dean of the School of Science and Engineering.
