Building Your Engineering Foundation: How the Program Works


This program is designed to give a solid academic background in the sciences and mathematics that are essential to persons who are interested in becoming engineers. Students interested in obtaining a (1) BS in Chemistry, Biology, or Physics from Xavier and a BSE in Chemical (and Biomolecular) Engineering from Tulane OR (2) a BS in Biology or Physics and a BSE in Biomedical Engineering OR (3) a BS in Physics and a BSE in Engineering Physics can do so via the 3+2 program. At Xavier, students are provided with the counseling, academic, and other support services that will maximize their opportunity for completion of the first three years of the program. For the "3" part of the 3 + 2 program, students take three years of basic science, mathematics, engineering, and liberal arts courses at Xavier. During this time, students also can take classes at Tulane through the consortium program. When the three-year program at Xavier is completed successfully, students transfer to Tulane to complete the "+2" part of the program with their training in biomedical engineering (BME), chemical and biomolecular engineering (CBE) or Engineering Physics (ENGP). At Tulane, students will work with an advisor in their chosen major, a Newcomb Tulane College advisor, and other support services to ensure their success in the program. It is expected that students will, with normal course loads, be able to complete their undergraduate training  in both universities by the end of the 5th year.

a B.A. or B.S. degree with a major at Xavier University of Louisiana

a B.S.E. degree with an engineering major at Tulane University

Steps to Follow to complete a BSE in Biomedical Engineering

Students should adhere to the following timeline:

 

Work with their Xavier major advisor for Biology or Physics and the Xavier 3+2 program director, Dr. Ouloide Yannick Goue, to make sure they are completing all Xavier requirements. Also, contact the 3+2 program advisor for Biomedical Engineering at Tulane, Dr. Mykel Green, to set up the initial advising session with Tulane Biomedical Engineering. This is the best way to make sure both universities stay in synch with the goals of your two degree programs.

By the end of the second year, complete the Xavier-Tulane 3/2 Engineering Interest Form.

In consultation with the student’s major advisor in Biology or Physics at Xavier and the 3+2 program advisor at Tulane, Dr. Mykel Green, take 3-4 engineering courses through the consortium program:

Fall: ENGP 2430 Mechanics of Materials, BMEN 2310 Product and Experimental Design

Spr: BMEN 2600 Introduction to Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry, BMEN 2730 Biomedical Electronics, ENGP 3120 Materials Science and Engineering

In spring of Year 3, they will need to update information (transcripts, etc.) in the Xavier-Tulane 3/2 Engineering Interest Form. By the end of the third year, Tulane University will make a formal decision about admission to the “+2” portion of the program. 

Work with their Tulane Biomedical Engineering major advisor to make sure they are completing all Tulane requirements.

 

Steps to Follow to Complete a BSE in Chemical Engineering

Students should adhere to the following timeline:

Also, contact the 3+2 program advisor at Tulane, Dr. Katie Russell, to set up the initial advising session with Tulane Chemical Engineering. This is the best way to make sure both universities stay in synch with the goals of your two degree programs.

By the end of the second year, complete the Xavier-Tulane 3/2 Engineering Interest Form.

In consultation with the student’s major advisor at Xavier and the 3+2 program advisor at Tulane, Dr. Katie Russell, take 3-4 engineering courses through the consortium program:

Fall: CENG 2110 Material and Energy Balances
MATH 2240 Intro to Applied Math (the recommended differential equations course)

Spr: CENG 2120 Thermodynamics I
CENG 2320 Transport I: Fluids

Students should adhere to the following timeline:


In conjunction with the ENGP program, students also have the option of specializing by earning a minor in Mechanical, Electrical, or Materials Engineering, or a certificate in Computational Engineering. 

 

Work with their Xavier major advisor for Physics and the Xavier 3+2 program director, Dr. Ouloide Yannick Goue, to make sure they are completing all Xavier requirements. Also, contact the 3+2 program advisor for Engineering Physics at Tulane, Dr. Anoop Rajappan, to set up the initial advising session with Tulane Engineering Physics. This is the best way to make sure both universities stay in synch with the goals of your two degree programs .

By the end of the second year, complete the Xavier-Tulane 3/2 Engineering Interest Form.

In consultation with the student’s major advisor in Physics at Xavier and the 3+2 program advisor at Tulane, Dr. Ahmad Majed, take 3-4 engineering courses through the consortium program:

Fall: ENGP 2430 Mechanics of Materials, ENGP 2310 Product and Experimental Design

Spr: ENGP 2120 Thermodynamics I, ENGP 2730 Electronics, ENGP 3120 Materials Science and Engineering

FAQs

 

Competitive applicants:

-    Will earn a 3.0 GPA or higher at Xavier University (Note: your GPA will be calculated based on ALL grades earned at Xavier, including any grades for courses that are subsequently retaken)
-    Receive no grades lower than a C-
-    Take a minimum of three engineering courses at Tulane through the consortium

Students who do not meet all three admissions criteria for the +2 will still be considered for admission. Students who do not meet all three admissions criteria are encouraged to discuss the competitiveness of their application with their advisors at Xavier and Tulane.

Students who complete the science portion of the degree program at Xavier within 3 years will be given full consideration for admission. Students who do not complete all requirements at Xavier within 3 years may be able to start the “+2” Engineering program at Tulane in the middle of the fourth year or at the beginning of the fifth year. Students who are unable to complete their requirements at Xavier within 3 years are encouraged to discuss the competitiveness of their application with their advisors at Xavier and Tulane.

In the third year, when you take courses at both Xavier and Tulane, the tuition for up to two courses taken at Tulane per semester will be covered via the consortium program agreement that exists between the two schools.

The “+2” Engineering tuition scholarship is a merit-based academic scholarship awarded by Tulane that covers the full cost of tuition. The “+2” Engineering tuition scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis. Competitive students will typically have (1) a 3.0 GPA at Xavier, (2) no grades lower than a C- on their transcript, (3) a minimum of three engineering courses completed at Tulane during the third year through the consortium program, and (4) a recommendation from their Xavier advisor. Students who wish to be considered for the scholarship must complete the FAFSA and the CS profile and will also be considered for need-based financial aid. 

-   Students who receive the merit-based “+2” Engineering tuition scholarship are still responsible for student fees and any housing costs.
-   Students must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA to maintain the “+2” Engineering tuition scholarship.
-   The “+2” Engineering tuition scholarship covers tuition for a maximum of two years while students earn a BSE at Tulane.

Students who are not covered by the “+2” Engineering tuition scholarship will be responsible for Tulane tuition. Students are encouraged to submit the FAFSA and the CS profile so that they can be considered for need-based aid.
