Hong (Hailey) Shen
Received her PhD in Larry Byers' lab in 2007, has just been appointed senior research scientist at Carefusion, a global health care safety company in Chicago.
Helen (Xiaojoe) Yao
Completed her PhD in the Byers lab in 2000 is now a Principal Scientist at Pfizer Corporation, in Gronton, Connecticut. After receiving her PhD she was a post-doc at Standford University in the laboratory of Brian Kobilka and then a Staff Scientistat Duke University in the laboratory of Robert Lefkowitz, both winners of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2012.
Sivaguru Jayaraman
2003 graduate, now Professor at North Dakota State University. Dr. Siva was guest speaker for the September 10, 2012 seminar titled, "Strategies for selective light induced transformations in solution".
Dr. Scott McCaul and Kim McKean
In town for the 2008 Jazz Festival, Dr. Scott McCaul and Kim McKean visited with Professor Larry Byers. Dr. McCaul received his undergraduate degree at Tulane and went on to medical school. After medical school returned to Tulane and postdoc with Dr. Byers. Dr. McCaul is a pulmonolgist who lives in San Diego. Kim McKean received her undergraduate degree at Tulane while working for Professor William Alworth.
Yaw-Kuen Li
Professor Larry Byers was Li's Research Advisor. Yaw-Kuen Li is now Chairman of the Department of Applied Chemistry, National Chiao Tung University, Taiwan.
Jeanie Osborn
Received her Ph.D in Chemistry from Tulane in 1986, recently visited the department and Professor Larry Byers. Jeanie works for the Naval Research Lab (NRL) in Washington, DC.
William F. Carroll, Jr.
Received his M.S. in Chemistry from Tulane in 1975, has been voted president-elect of the American Chemical Society for 2004. William F. Carroll, Jr. of Occidental Chemical Corporation (Dallas, TX), will serve as ACS president in 2005 and as a member of the ACS Board of Directors from 2004 to 2006.
Edwin H. Walker, Jr.
Received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Tulane in 1998, was featured in an article in "Black Issues in Higher Education."
Scott M. Grayson
Received his B.S. in Chemistry from Tulane in 1996 joined the faculty of the Chemistry department in June, 2005.
Tom Archibald
C and E News reports that Tom Archibald, who received his Ph.D. In organic chemistry in 1967 from Tulane University, has been appointed vice president for research and technology at Rhodia Chirex in Boston.
John C. Trebellas
Received his Ph.D. from Tulane in 1965, and his wife, Katherine Bergeret (Kay) who received her B.S. in Physics from Newcomb College in 1960 and her M.S. in Chemistry at Tulane in 1964. In 2005 they established the John C. and Katherine B. Trebellas Chemistry Fellowship Fund. This endowed fund supports research activities of graduate students in the Department of Chemistry as determined by the chair of the department.
Arlo Harris
The Department also wants to acknowledge an endowment from the estate of Arlo Harris. Arlo Harris also received his Ph.D. In chemistry from Tulane in 1965. For several years prior to his death Dr. Harris provided an annual gift to the Department and left an additional amount in his will for an endowed fellowship. The Department persuaded the University to accept that this endowment should be used to provide a fellowship each year for a deserving graduate student in chemistry. Last year the Arlo Harris fellowship award was made to Karthikeyan Sivasubramanian. Mr. Sivasubramanian was recommended by the Graduate Affairs Committee as the graduate student with the best overall record in his first year.
Hans B. Jonassen
The Department also awards a Hans B. Jonassen Fellowship award each year from an endowment set up by the friends, family , and many students of Professor Jonassen. This endowment is also used to provide a fellowship each year for a deserving graduate student in chemistry. Last year the Hans Jonassen fellowship was awarded to Robert Boyle. Mr. Boyle was recommended by the Graduate Affairs Committee for his outstanding work as a Ph.D. Candidate in the Inorganic Division.
