2015

October 5, 2015: A. Reed presented an invited talk on next generation hardware and software sensors at Materials Science & Technology 15 in Columbus, OH.

September 2015: Prof. Reed presented an invited lecture on recent advances in ACOMP at Sci-X in Providence, RI.

August 2015: A. Reed presented a PolyRMC testbed related to Smart Manufacturing at a planning workshop at Texas A&M in College Station, TX.

August 16-20, 2015: Prof. Reed presented an invited lecture on Smart Materials monitoring and characterization at the Fall 2015 national ACS meeting in Boston, MA.

June 8-10, 2015: Prof. Reed presented Second Generation ACOMP monitoring of stimuli responsive (smart) polymeric materials at the 28th ISPAC in Houston, TX. M. Drenski presented industrial ACOMP results at the same conference.

May 2015: PolyRMC welcomes Dr. Aide Wu as a postdoc on the team. Dr. Wu comes from the New Jersey Institute of Technology and is highly trained in synthetic and analytical chemistry. He will be working on industrial projects and on the SMATDAP consortium project.

May 18-20, 2015: PolyRMC hosted its semi-annual GPC/SEC training course at Tulane. Scientists and engineers from industry and academia participated on the project. 

May 10-15, 2015: Prof. Reed presented material on industrial ACOMP applications and outlook for predictive control of polymerization reactions at the 9th annual Polymer Reactor Engineering Conference in Cancun, Mexico.

March 2015: PolyRMC welcomes Dr. Reza Farasat as a postdoc on the team. Dr. Farasat comes from University of Alabama Birmingham and is highly trained in polymer characterization. He will be working on various industrially funded projects. 

March 22-26, 2015: Prof. Reed gave an invited lecture on recent advances in ACOMP at the Spring ACS meeting in Denver, CO.

January 2015: PolyRMC welcomes Dr. Carlos Castor as a postdoc on the team. Dr. Castor comes from Prof. Jose Carlos Pinto's group at the Federal University in Rio de Janeiro. Dr. Castor will be working on the predictive modeling and control related to the Dept. of Energy consortium project.

2014

December 2014: PolyRMC (Prof. Reed, PI), Louisiana State University (Prof. Romagnoli) and Advanced Polymer Monitoring Technologies, Inc. (M. Drenski) began a 2 yr. consortium project related to the predictive control of polymers utilizing ACOMP data.

November 2014: PolyRMC welcomes Dr. Nazila Soleimani as a postdoctoral researcher. She comes from Shasta Crystals, a research company in San Francisco. Dr. Soleimani has a PhD in physics and has focused on optics in her various research roles.

November 10-12, 2014: PolyRMC hosted its 10th GPC Academy with participation from a diverse set of industries and several institutions participating on the SMATDAP consortium.

October 15, 2014: Prof. Alb has been invited to give a seminar at the University of New Orleans on her research on stimuli responsive polymers.

October 2014: PolyRMC welcomes Ms. Vivian Cristina Spier, PhD student in the Chemistry Department of University Federal of Parana (UFPR), Brazil to work for one year on a biopolymer research project funded by the Brazilian federal science agency, CNPq. Ms. Spier's project will be co-supervised by Prof. Alina Alb at PolyRMC and Prof. Rilton Alves de Freitas (former Prof. Reed postdoc) at UFPR. Prof. Reed and PolyRMC have a long history of collaboration with Brazil. PolyRMC is excited to continue the tradition of educating Brazilian students and collaborating with Brazilian researchers.

September 2014: Prof. Ashbaugh (Chem E), Prof. Scott Grayson (Chemistry) and Prof. Reed were part of a Louisiana-Mississippi consortium awarded $6M by the National Science Foundation over 3 years to research smart polymers.

August 18-19, 2014: Prof. Reed presented an invited lecture at the Boston Bioprocessing Summit titled, "Recent Advances in Monitoring Protein Aggregation Kinetcis and Mechanisms with Simultaneous Multiple Sample Light Scattering (SMSLS)," in Boston, MA.

August 10-14, 2014: Prof. Alb chaired a session of the Polymer Chemistry Division at the 248th ACS National Meeting in San Francisco, CA and presented research on "Macromolecular Characterization of Novel Amphiphilic Copolymer Grafted Nanoparticles, as Concentration-Independent Dispersants for Improved Oil Spill Remediation," funded by GoMRI.

July 1, 2014: PolyRMC congratulates PolyRMC faculty affiliate Prof. Scott Grayson (Tulane Chemistry Dept.), PolyRMC Assoc. Director Prof. Alina Alb and PolyRMC collaborator Prof. Hank Ashbaugh (Tulane Chemical Engineering Dept.) for an award of a recent research proposal from the National Science Foundation Division of Chemistry, Macromolecular/Supramolecular/ Nanochemistry. This interdisciplinary project begins in fall 2014 and will promote fundamental research activity and will serve to build stronger ties between the three research teams.

June 1, 2014: PolyRMC was awarded a one year OPT-IN grant from the Louisiana Board of Regents as a match to funding from long-time PolyRMC collaborator Biogen Idec. This joint research project will study new features of PolyRMC's SMSLS technology.

June 16-18, 2014: Prof. Reed presented, "Hydrophobic dopant-enhanced and polymer-suppressed supramicellar assemblies," at the 27th International Symposium on Polymer Analysis and Characterization (ISPAC) in Les Diablerets, Switzerland. Prof. Reed was also elected as co-chair of ISPAC for the Americas.

May 15-16, 2014: Prof. Reed attended an international conference in Uzbekistan as an invited guest of the president of Uzbekistan and one of 5 American scholar representatives.

April 7-11, 2013:  Prof. Alb will present two talks at the 245th ACS National Meeting in New Orleans, LA in the Division of Polymer Chemistry.  The first presentation is: Evelyn F. de Melo and Alina M. Alb, "pH dependent self-assembly behavior of amphiphilic diblock copolymers by RAFT studied by light scattering-based methods."  The second presentation is: Zifu Zhu and Alina M. Alb, "Synthesis and characterization of guar gum-g-poly(acrylic acid) copolymers."  Prof. Alb will be chairing the session.

February 14, 2013:  Alex Reed represented PolyRMC at the SMLC board meeting in Orlando, FL.

September 4, 2012: Zheng Li has successfully defended his thesis, "Study on stimuli-sensitive copolymers: synthesis and characterization," for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.  Dissertation director: Prof. Alina Alb.  PolyRMC wishes Dr. Li good luck in his future work at Ashland Specialty Ingredients, Inc.

 August 19-23, 2012: Zhu, Z.; Reed, W.F.; Alb, A.M., "Light scattering study of the contrasting interaction between ionic surfactant and neutral polymers," Division of Colloid and Surface Chemistry, 244th ACS National Meeting, Philadelphia.

August 2012: Anton Dudko will present collaborative work between PolyRMC and Prof. John Anderson (UL-Monroe) at the International Conference of Physics Students 2012 in Enschede, Neth-erlands.

June 20, 2012: PolyRMC Associate Director for Instrumentation, Michael Drenski, and PolyRMC Assistant Director for Operations and Marketing attended the Department of Energy Innovative Manufacturing Initiative recognition event in Washington, D.C. on behalf of PolyRMC. PolyRMC's Louisiana Sustainable Chemical Manufacturing Consortium proposal along with partners LSU Process Systems Engineering, Nalco Co., Advanced Polymer Monitoring Technologies, Inc., and the Louisiana Chemical Association, was selected as an 'alternate' for funding, pending the availability of funding in FY '13.  The solicitation was one of the most competitive in the history of the DoE, with only 13 awards and 26 alternates selected from over 1,400 original letters of intent.

June 18, 2012: PolyRMC Director, Prof. Wayne Reed, will present an invited lecture entitled,"Recent advances in monitoring and polymerization reactions and other non-equilibrium processes in macromolecular solutions," at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Thessaloniki, Greece.  See the abstract for more information

June 11-13, 2012:PolyRMC Director, Prof. Wayne Reed, will present an invited talk entitled, "Recent advances in polymer reaction monitoring and solution characterization," at the 25th International Symposium on Polymer Analysis and Characterization (ISPAC).

May 9, 2012:  Drs. March 25-29, 2012:   Physics graduate student, Zheng Li, presented research in the Division of Polymer Chemistry, at the 243rd ACS National Meeting in San Diego, CA.  The research was: Li, Z.; Alb, A.M., "Monitoring copolyelectrolyte synthesis during semibatch polymerization reactions.

2011

October 25-27, 2011:  PolyRMC'S GPC Academy completed its fall 2011 session. Attendees from all over the United States with diverse applications ranging from proteins to polyolefins learned GPC theory, background and practical hands-on techniques from an international team of world expert GPC instructors including PolyRMC team members Prof. Wayne Reed, Prof. Alina Alb, and Michael Drenski, Polymer Standards Service USA (PSS) president, John McConville, WGE-Dr Bures (WGE) owner and vice president, Carlo Dessy, and Brookhaven Instruments Corporation (BIC) director of marketing and sales, Lily Zu.  Other attendees included a select group of Tulane University chemistry and chemical engineering graduate students and a post-doctoral researcher from Xavier University in New Orleans.  The PolyRMC GPC Academy and its instrumentation sponsors are looking forward to the spring 2012 session.  For more information about the next session please contact Alex Reed at areed2@tulane.edu or (504) 865-5087.

July 31 - August 5, 2011:  PolyRMC Associate Director for Research, Prof. Alina Alb, presented research performed by herself and Tulane Physics graduate, Zheng Li, entitled, "Online Monitoring of the Synthesis of NanoComposite Materials via RAFT Polymerization in Emulsion," at the 43rd IUPAC World Chemistry Congress in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

June 6-8, 2011: PolyRMC Director, Prof. Wayne Reed, will present an introductory course on ACOMP at the 24th International Symposium on Polymer Analysis and Characterization (ISPAC).

May 23-25, 2011: PolyRMC hosted its semi-annual Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) Training Seminar in conjunction with instrumentation partners, Brookhaven Instruments Corporation (BIC), WGE Dr Bures (WGE), and Polymer Standards Service (PSS).  The next GPC Seminar is scheduled for October 25-27, 2011.  

March 27-31, 2011: PolyRMC Associate Director for Research, Prof. Alina Alb, presented work at the 241st ACS National Meeting & Exposition in Anaheim, California.  The work was presented in the Division of Polymer Chemistry with the first presentation entitled, "Effect of ionic strength on polyzwitterions conformations and interactions for controlled-structure polymeric betaines via RAFT," Zifu Zhu (1), Joel Flores (2), Charles L. McCormick (2), Wayne F. Reed (1), and  Alina M. January 14, 2011: PolyRMC created a YouTube channel where it will share videos and other information about PolyRMC's technologies and research activities.  The channel is at http://www.youtube.com/user/PolyRMC

2010

November 30-December 4, 2010:  The ACS 66th SWRM and 62nd SERMA will be held in New Orleans. PolyRMC physics graduate student Zheng Li will present work by himself and Prof. Alb entitled, "pH-responsive amphiphilic copolymers via RAFT, Synthesis and characterization."  PolyRMC physics graduate student Colin McFaul will present work entitled, "Light Scattering detection of LCST during copolymer synthesis."

October 10-13, 2010: Prof. Reed was a keynote speaker at the 10th International Workshop on Polymer Reaction Engineering sponsored by Dechema, the German society for chemical and biotechnology, in Hamburg, Germany.

May 30, 2010:  PolyRMC Associate Director for Research, Prof. Alina Alb and PolyRMC Director, Prof. Wayne Reed, prepared a short course on ACOMP which was presented at the 23rd International Symposium on Polymer Analysis and Characterization (ISPAC) in Pohang, Republic of Korea.

May 11, 2010:  PolyRMC spun off Advanced Polymer Monitoring Technologies LLC, a start-up company that will seek to commercialize PolyRMC innovations, including the ACOMP technology.

April 25-May 1, 2010:  PolyRMC Associate Director for Research, Alina Alb, traveled to Brazil to visit with colleagues and collaborators in Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paolo, Sao Carlos, and Curitiba. 

March 21-25, 2010:  PolyRMC Associate Director for Research, Alina Alb presided over Division of Polymer Chemistry session "General Topics in the Characterization of Polymers" on March 24, 2010 at the ACS Spring 2010 National Meeting & Exposition. Prof. Alb presented research on "Online monitoring of nitroxide mediated polymerization in emulsion" and "Deviations from livingness during gradient copolymerization by RAFT."  PolyRMC graduate student Zheng Li presented a poster in the same division titled, "Toward amphiphilic diblock copolymers by RAFT, kinetic study on pH responsive polymers."  PolyRMC graduate student Colin McFaul presented a poster titled, "During synthesis monitoring of polymer lower critical solution temperature." 

March 2-3, 2010:  PolyRMC Director, Wayne Reed, was invited to give a talk at the University of Southern Mississippi School of Polymers and High Performance Materials.

February 26, 2010:  PolyRMC Director, Wayne Reed was invited to give a talk on ACOMP at the Queen's University in Ontario, Canada.

February 3, 2010:  PolyRMC staff met with representatives from Nalco to discuss an ongoing research collaboration on February 3, 2010.

January 27-28, 2010: PolyRMC hosted its first GPC/SEC course at Tulane University. Attendees from various corporations participated, and course instructors included PolyRMC staff, PolyRMC Advisory Board Member and Brookhaven Business Development Director, Dr. John McConville, and WGE President, Dr. Carlo Dessy.  PolyRMC is working with Brookhaven on setting up another GPC/SEC course, and exploring possbilities of other courses and Webinars.

January 5, 2010:  PolyRMC had its first annual retreat and strategy meeting in McNeil, MS.

December 26, 2009:  PolyRMC Director Wayne Reed and Marketing Coordinator Alex Reed visited with Advisory Board member Dr. John McConville in Holyoke, MA. 

December 23, 2009:  PolyRMC Director Wayne Reed and PolyRMC Operations Manager and Marketing Coordinator Alex Reed visited with the center's GPC training course sponsor, Brookhaven's President, Dr.Bruce Weiner in Long Island, NY.

October 26, 2009: The Eleventh President of India, Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, briefly visited with Prof. Reed at PolyRMC's lab in Israel 310.

June 15, 2009:PolyRMC registered as a third-party consultant with the Manufacturing Extension Partnership of Louisiana (MEPOL).

June 11, 2009: PolyRMC had a booth at the LCIA Trade Show in Lake Charles, LA.

May 27, 2009: PolyRMC became a member of the Louisiana Chemical Industry Alliance (LCIA).

May 15-16, 2009: PolyRMC Advisory Board Chairman Dr. Bill Bottoms visited PolyRMC to discuss various initiatives.

May 12, 2009: MEPOL project director, Rebecca Scherff, will visit PolyRMC.

May 5, 2009:  Visitors from PolyRMC collaborator, Lion Copolymer LLC, visited the center.

April 27, 2009: Dr. Shaffiq Jaffer, the new Chief Scientific Representative for Total E&P USA visited PolyRMC. Total has been a long-term collaborator with PolyRMC.

April 22, 2009: Dr. Benjamin Figard, from Shimadzu, visited PolyRMC.

April 3, 2009: PolyRMC participated at the Tulane Engineering Forum (TEF), founding director Dr. Wayne Reed was a speaker at the forum, as was Board Member, Dr. Chris Roger.

March 30, 2009: Dr. Andre Striegel, of Florida State University, visited PolyRMC, and gave a talk titled, "Zen and the Art of Approximation in Characterizing "Real-World" Polymers," sponsored by TIMES.

March 18, 2009: Tomasz Kreft defended his thesis titled, "Predictive Control of Free Radical Polymerization Reactions Including Copolymeric Polyelectrolytes."  He will be joining Dr. David Haddleton's group at the University of Warwick, England in May, 2009.  He will continue his work with ACOMP.

January 30, 2009: Scientists from Nalco visited PolyRMC to discuss collaboration opportunities.

January 17, 2009: PolyRMC welcomes Dr. Nodirali Normakhamatov who is visiting from the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry, Uzbek Academy of Sciences. He will utilize PolyRMC characterization methods to analyze a patented Natural Product used in the pharmaceutical industry.

January 15, 2009: Due to the Economic downturn, Varian inc. has decided to exit the equipment business in the ACOMP area.  This gives PolyRMC the exciting opportunity to re-orient the commercialization dimension of ACOMP; several possible options on how to proceed with the ACOMP development are under investigation.

2008

November 1, 2008:  PolyRMC welcomes Prof. Fabio Florenzano, Director of the Health Science Center, Sapucai University in Pouso Alegre (MG), Brazil, who is visiting PolyRMC for two months on a grant of Fundacao de Amparo a Pesquisa de Minas Gerais - FAPEMIG. 

October 14, 2008: PolyRMC staff visit Nalco's Garyville, Louisiana site for presentations and plant tour.

October 1, 2008:  PolyRMC welcomes Dr. Frank Bentrem, scientist from Naval Research Laboratory, Mississippi, who is visiting PolyRMC for a 7 month sabbatical leave.

April 11, 2008:  PolyRMC welcomes Haifeng Gao and Ke Min  from  Prof. Matyjaszewski's research group at Carnegie Mellon University.  During their 9 day collaborative visit to PolyRMC they will use ACOMP to monitor some of their latest ATRP based controlled radical polymerization reactions.

March 5, 2008: PolyRMC welcomes Prof. Rilton Alves de Freitas who is visiting PolyRMC on a 6 month grant from the Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico of Brazil.

March 3, 2008:  PolyRMC will hold its first plenary Advisory Board Meeting.  Tulane President Scott Cowen will briefly address the Board during the meeting, and there will be a reception afterwards. Photos

February 13, 2008:  PolyRMC welcomes Prof. Hyuk Yu as a Distinguished Visiting Polymer and Colloid Scientist at PolyRMC.  Professor Yu is also a PolyRMC Advisory Board member, and will be in residence until March 31, 2008.

January 25, 2008: PolyRMC will hold a sub-group meeting of the Advisory Board on Friday, at Tulane, 4pm-6pm.  The topic of the meeting is  "Louisiana Initiatives".  Board members Dan Borné and Ronnie Evans are scheduled to attend, along with a special guest, Mr. Paul Flower, who is also a member of Tulane's Advisory Board for the School of Science & Engineering.

Dec. 7, 2007:  PolyRMC is pleased to host a visit by Advisory Board member, Dr. Chris Roger.  In the afternoon, Board members Mr. Ronald Evans and Mr. Dan Borné will join Dr. Roger and PolyRMC personnel for informal presentations and discussions.

Dec. 3-5, 2007: PolyRMC Director, Wayne Reed, will be presenting an invited talk, " Recent Advances in Automatic Continuous Online Monitoring of Polymerization reactions (ACOMP)" at the Vingtièmes Entretiens du Centre Jacques Cartier sur 'Modeling, Monitoring, and Control of Polymer Properties', ESCPE, Lyon, France.

Nov. 2-10: PolyRMC Director, Wayne Reed, will be visiting several Brazilian universities to help organize a collaboration on the development of natural products found in Brazil, and to give several seminars.  The trip is under the auspices of the US National Science Foundation, and involves the following universities:  Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (Porto Alegre), Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (Florianopolis), Universidade Federal de Parana (Curitiba), and Univali (Itajai).

October 30, 2007: PolyRMC welcomes Mark Reeder and Eric Dickinson of Solvay Polymers, together with PolyRMC Advisory Board member Dr. John McConville, and his colleague Richard Lentner, both of  Polymer Laboratories, Inc. (a division of Varian Inc.).

September 17-21, 2007: PolyRMC will host a one week series of collaborative experiments with Arkema scientists Drs. Stephan Moyses and Jason Ness, who will be at PolyRMC Sept. 17-21, 2007.  Arkema Research Fellow Dr. Chris Bertelo will also visit PolyRMC during this period.
