Scot Ackerman MakerSpace dedication
The dedication of the Scot Ackerman MakerSpace took place Thursday, Oct. 17 on Tulane's Uptown campus. The space offers students and professors access to fabrication tools such as laser cutters, lathes, milling machines and 3D printers. Ackerman is medical director of the Ackerman Cancer Center, a radiation oncologist and Tulane alumnus. For more on the Scot Ackerman MakerSpace, click here.
Tulane study points to natural cause for arsenic-tainted water
In 2013, residents of Cow Island, located in the southwestern Louisiana parish of Vermilion, successfully sued a pharmaceutical company to pay $5 million for cleanup of arsenic-contaminated soil and water.
The suit, which stemmed from a local priest’s battle with cancer, claimed that the arsenic came from insecticides in cattle dip tanks, which were used for much of the 20th century to eradicate a deadly cattle disease known as Texas tick fever.

Tulane's School of Science and Engineering worked with several middle school boys, in grades fifth through seventh, on Saturday, Oct. 5, at its annual Boys at Tulane in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) workshop. The workshop aims to support and inspire young boys' interests in STEM fields.
Tulane student shows ‘Right Stuff’ at NASA Glenn Research Center competition
Meghan Bush, an engineering physics senior at Tulane University, would like to work at NASA one day, and if her recent experience at the NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland is any indication, NASA would be lucky to have her.
Bush, interning in the Photovoltaic and Electrochemical Systems Branch, bested 200 other interns to win the first GlennTalks Live competition, sponsored by Glenn’s Office of Education.
SMART-REU program gives undergraduates valuable research experience
It’s a valuable opportunity when undergraduates can collaborate on research with university faculty, and programs like the Summer Materials Research at Tulane – Research Experience for Undergraduates (SMART-REU) are creating more such possibilities. The SMART-REU is a 10-week summer program that brings in undergraduate students from across the country and pairs them with Tulane faculty in chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, chemistry or physics/engineering physics.

Tulane University student spends summer conducting brain tumor research in Switzerland
Tulane University senior James Rogers has been charting a course in the name of research since he arrived on campus in the fall of 2016. Rogers’ journey has led him from New Orleans to Bethesda, Md., across the Atlantic to Scotland and, most recently, Switzerland, where he spent the summer as a visiting research scholar in the Brain Tumor Center at the University Hospital Zürich (USZ).

Tulane researcher working to turn waste to fuel wins NSF Career Award
Nicholas Sandoval, an assistant professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at Tulane University, is the recipient of a National Science Foundation Early Career Award.
The $507,000 award will allow Sandoval and his team of graduate students to continue their work on a type of bacteria with potentially important applications in biofuels, carbon capture and cancer treatment.

In the Academic Year in Review, Tulane University President Michael A. Fitts presents the university’s most extraordinary achievements of the 2018–19 academic year. The theme, “The Power of Tulane,” serves to highlight the people and programs that take on global challenges while also serving the local community.
The academic year’s accomplishments include:
